Project idea

For my first side hustle project, I’m working on affiliate marketing in the fashion niche with outfit collages! You can see this post for a full introduction to the project.

What I’ve been up to

I initially thought that I would just be posting pins on pinterest. This turned out not to work out very well. I started by trying to make an account and posting just fashion affiliate links from amazon on there. However I got banned for spam, and every account I made after that in which I followed the same strategy also got banned lol.

After my third account got banned, I ended up revamping an old existing pinterest account where I used to post outfit collages and following the same format but tagging the products. This however was also not working very well. I had very low monthly impressions and outbound clicks.

I got a tip that I needed to make a “landing page” to direct people somewhere so that they could shop my links, so I decide I would go for a new strategy. I started a blog in a more specific sub niche of fashion which I felt was not saturated. I was initially really stuck while thinking about this blog because I had no idea what direction or style I wanted the blog to be.

In the meantime, a pin that I posted on pinterest started going viral. This happened around two weeks ago and it still has been consistently getting getting saves and views. Unfortunately even though I tagged the products in the pin they don’t really get as much attention, so I was pretty convinced that I needed to have the pin directly link to content.

The only difference between this pin and the other pins I posted is that the items in the collage were professionally photographed. So I decided I would change my outfit collages to use product images instead. That also gave me inspiration for how to organize my blog so I went ahead and started setting it up.

At the point of writing this, I have fully setup the website, and filled it out with 17 posts. I had certain amount of content I wanted to reach before I started promoting my website so that people have something to look through and I managed to hit my goal within three weeks of starting my blog!

My plan for this month

I had applied to some affiliate programs last month. I was already part of the amazon affiliate program which is just immediate acceptance. I got into one other specific affiliate program which was also immediate acceptance but I don’t know that I like their products that much so I probably won’t use them.

I also got into Awin, which is a global affiliate program but you have to be accepted before you can apply to any companies. Awin has a lot of company affiliate programs that I want to apply to, like Etsy. I already applied to Etsy but I got rejected and they said that I should reapply when all my pages have content on them so I just did that.

So this month my plan is to apply to affiliate programs for some of the companies whose products I’ve been using to make my outfit collages. I want to branch out of just amazon since it’s very limiting and for clothing is generally not the best quality.

I’m also planning on switching over my website to a new server since the one I’m using right now is pretty slow. I want to launch my website (ie announce it to friends and the world) but I want to make sure that it’s running smoothly before I do that so it doesn’t crash if a lot of people visit it.

I also want to set up my newsletter so that it sends automatic welcome emails and create a template for my newsletter. I was initially going to set it up manually so I’m collecting the email submissions using a form plugin, but sending an automatic welcome email is turning out to be very difficult. So that’s something else that I want to figure out too before launching my website.

Did I hit last month’s goals?

I half hit them. I wanted to double my pinterest monthly impressions but instead they went up more than 10x!!! I also wanted to make at least one affiliate sale but that hasn’t happened.
